Babies born still fully inside the amniotic sac, or ‘en caul’, are extremely rare. It’s something that occurs in less than one in 80,000 births! The baby is born still inside of the unbroken sac which balloons out at birth.
Because it is rarely seen, it may appear slightly shocking to an unprepared new mother, however it is safe and easily removed by the attending physician
